State Administrative Bishop Preference/Evaluation voting process

November 5, 2021

Dear Fellow Minister:

Greetings in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ:

Next July we will gather in San Antonio for the General Assembly, and at the conclusion of such, the appointment of administrative bishops/state overseers will be made by the International Executive Committee.  As part of the appointment process, ministers in each state/region will have the opportunity to either submit a preference ballot for a new overseer, evaluate their current overseer, or in some cases do both.

The Church of God Minutes (S32) provide that the term of office for an administrative bishop/state overseer is four years.  However, as a service to our administrative bishops, the International Executive Committee has determined to use a review and evaluation instrument each Assembly period to hopefully help strengthen administrative performance.  Your review and evaluation, as well as your preference ballot, will be held in the strictest confidence and the International Executive Committee will only view the tabulated results and a composite list of comments.

The preference ballot and evaluation form will be available in late December – online for those who use the ministerial reporting website and mailed to those who submit reports by mail.  Any minister who has been exempted from filing monthly reports are marked as current on all ministerial reports.

To be eligible to participate, the Minutes require the following:

  • That the credentialed minister be current with their personal ministerial reports to both their state/regional office and the International Offices.  In addition, those ministers who have been appointed as a pastor of a local church much also be current, or in covenant agreement, with their state/region and international monthly church reports, including appropriate monies, beginning at the time of their appointment, in order to participate in the process.  (NOTE:  The International Executive Committee has ruled that to be “current” with your personal ministerial reports means that you can have no more than three (3) missing church reports and/or no more than $1,000 in unpaid tithe of tithes), and
  • That all credentialed ministers be active in both tithing and attendance in a local Church of God congregation within the state/region in which the vote/evaluation is conducted.

Those not meeting these requirements will be deemed ineligible to participate in the evaluation and preference ballot process.  Any missing reports (minister and church reports) along with delinquent monies must be received and entered at State/Region and International Offices no later than November 30.

To check the status of your past reports:

  • International Offices
    • Online reporting – visit the Church of God reporting portal
    • Mail reporting – contact Business and Records Office at 423.478.7149
  • Canadian Churches – contact the Canadian Regional Office to verify church reporting status
  • State/Regional Office – call state office to verify status

Thank you for your participation in this process and for your prayers as the International Executive Committee earnestly seeks the will of God for your state/region.  May the Lord bless and keep The Church on Mission as we advance the FINISH Commitment in the Spirit and Power of Pentecost!

Sincerely,

Dr. Timothy M. Hill
General Overseer

Participation in the Final Global Ministry Forums Encouraged

Participation in Final Forums Encouraged

CLEVELAND, TN:  As October begins, only five Global Ministry Forums are left to be conducted. Ministers and laity who have not previously attended a forum are encouraged to participate in one of the remaining forums.

“Every person who has not already attended a forum and who is interested in the future of the Church of God should try to attend one of the last few forums,” noted Dr. Timothy M. Hill, General Overseer of the Church of God. “Without all the rules that limit what can be discussed at meetings like the General Assembly, these forums have been an open and honest discussion about the issues. So don’t miss these final few opportunities to be heard.”

On Tuesday evening, Oct. 1, a forum will be held in the Pacific Northwest at New Life Fellowship Church in Longview, WA and then on Thursday, Oct. 3, another forum will occur at the Church on Strayer in the Toledo, OH area.

Those Global Ministry Forums will be followed by others in Hurst, TX (Oct. 15); Chicago, IL (Romanian Convention, Nov. 9); and Dasmarinas City, Philippines (Nov. 15).

The Global Ministry Forum survey will also close in mid-November. Everyone is encouraged to complete the survey, regardless of whether you are able to attend a forum.  More information on the remaining forums and the survey can be found at the Global Ministry Forums website by clicking or taping the button below.

Covid-19: Priority Report

The highly complicated, detailed, and strenuous process of coming to a decision to postpone the 78th International General Assembly because of the Covid-19 pandemic was a history-making event in the Church of God. It was the first time since World War II that the Assembly schedule was interrupted.

To preserve that history, a 28-page publication has been released which explores the process, timeline, historical precedence, and authority granted by the Minutes to arrive at the decision to postpone the July 2020 event to the summer of 2022. The report is available for download by visiting the link, churchofgodcommunications.com/priorityreport.

Printed copies are available for purchase by contacting [email protected].

Michigan Church of God Celebrates Centennial

The year was 1921. Detroit was starting to mass produce automobiles, Henry Ford was selling his Model T for $410, and the Church of God entered the Pleasant Peninsula! At the 1921 General Assembly, Efford Haynes was appointed as Overseer of Ohio and Michigan, and soon afterward a congregation was organized in Detroit and another in the Upper Peninsula town of Bessemer.

Declaration of Faith Sunday

Dear Pastor:

The Declaration of Faith is one of the Church of God’s most cherished articles of doctrine. It defines who we are as a movement and has stood the test of time since it was written and adopted as the official expression of our faith during the 1948 General Assembly.

The first Sunday in January is observed as Declaration of Faith Sunday in the Church of God. Pastors are encouraged to read the 14 statements within and otherwise call attention to the importance of the Declaration of Faith. To assist in this, General Overseer Tim Hill has prepared a short video suitable for playing during service. We hope you will consider downloading it for viewing this Sunday, January 5, 2020.

May God bless you and your church in this year.
