Introduction: There are many uncertainties in our lives, not least in the present Corona virus crisis. –to be human is to live with anxiety! Thoughts about uncertainties may even be distracting us at this moment! Joseph knew anxiety. His fiancée was pregnant, and he had not slept with her, so what was he to do? His decided to break off the engagement informally to save Mary from public disgrace.
Good News: Today we celebrate the feast of Saint Joseph, the foster-father of the Lord. That the child has been miraculously conceived by the Holy Spirit was not just good news for Joseph but for the whole human race, a sign that God had taken a new and decisive initiative in history, fulfilling the promise to Abraham; the child to be called Jesus, the one who will liberate his people from their sins. By becoming the legal father of Jesus, Joseph enables Jesus to be called ‘Son of David,’ a title of the Messiah, fulfilling the prophecy to Nathan, “Your house and your sovereignty will always stand secure before me.”
Application: Joseph was living with anxiety, but his dream showed him that he had a key place in God’s plan. Whatever my anxieties I can be sure that, like Joseph, I am called to perform some special work for God’s kingdom.
