Show Up For Them
“To the world you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”
_Theodor Seuss Beisel (more commonly known as “Dr. Seuss”)
Over the years I have learned that one of the most important things I can do is just show.
Of course there are those occasions where I am required to show up; hands on effort is required of me. However, there are many occasions where the most significant contribution I make is to simply show up.
An example of this is a recent Saturday.
At the beginning of this year, I was blessed to add a sharp young couple to my team: Seth/Kayla Brown. On the Saturday I am referring to; they were conducting their first major State Event. Sonja and I had no role to play, no contribution to give, there was nothing required of either of us. But we showed up.
What we were saying was, “You matter. What you’re doing matters, and we believe in you.” But not only that, by just by showing up, we affirmed the speaker, the Youth Board, and the many volunteer youth/children ministers who showed up for the event.
Later that day, I showed up at a Marriage Seminar that my wife was speaking at. Again, I had no direct responsibilities, there was nothing required of me, but there I was, sitting on the front row cheering Sonja on and honoring the pastor’s efforts. Me just showing up validated the event and encouraged the people there.
It is so easy to make life about ourselves and if we’re not directly involved or interested, then it is not really important. But that mindset robs us of so many opportunities to be a blessing and encouragement to others.
On any given day, as Dr. Seuss said, “To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you may be the world.”
Show up for them.
The ONE THING for today: One of the important indicators that you are alive and matter is that it matters to someone if you show up.
