Ask Again

And he called to her and said, “Please bring me a little water in a cup, that I may drink.” 11 And as she was going to get it, he called to her and said, “Please bring me a morsel of bread in your hand.”

(I Kings 17:10-11, NKJV)

I enjoy reading detective stories.

A common component of the detective story is the detective interviewing suspects.  And a common component of the interview is just when things are wrapping up and the suspect has breathed a silent sign of relief and begun to let their guard down, the detective, out of the blue, will say, “Oh and one more thing…”

It’s usually that “one more thing” that gives the detective the information he needs.

I’ve found that to be true in many other areas of life as well.

For example, a wise leader told me years ago when interviewing someone to ask for two more references (other than those listed on the resume).  His point was nobody puts references on a resume who will give a bad reference.  But it will be those unplanned for references where you will get your best information.  I have found that to be true many times.

Another practical application is picking people when you really need to get something done.  Don’t look around for someone sitting on the bench or in the stand doing nothing, find someone who is already coming through for you ask them. Trust me, your best chance of finding a winner is to start with the people already busy making a contribution.

You’re find this habit with those most productive in sales. Watch them, as they close the deal, they always have another ask.

The insurance salesman suggests a rider or asks whether you have a policy on your child or some such question.

The sales clerk selling you the new appliance will also suggest an optional attachment or improvement.

This is what the greats ones do.

I could go on, but you’re smart, you get the point, don’t be afraid to ask again.

Oh, and if you’re one of the people who is always being asked to do more or give more, take it as a compliment.  (You can always say no.)

Remember, when people ask, unless they’re desperate, they don’t ask losers for help, they ask people like you who are capable and proven winners already.

The ONE THING for today: When you’re looking for help, when something absolutely has got to be done, start with those dedicated busy people who have already come through for you.
