Charles recently pointed out that I Cor. 14 was a good chapter to take as our model for worship. It is indeed ! But at the same time the COG has had a hard time adhering to all of Paul’s instructions here. Partly because of changing times and culture, partly because of several other scriptures that are referred to when we think about worship.
For one thing ( as for as we know ) all the churches in Asia Minor were small house churches. They did not have rows of pews, pulpits, amplified loud speakers and classrooms for different age groups. They did not have paid or professional ministers nor song books. There were no denominational leaders cranking out literature and numerous other ” helps ” and probably no musical instruments, not even a tuning fork.
Just one of Paul’s instructions, where he said; ” Women should be silent during the church meetings. It is not proper for them to speak.” has been re-thought because this same Paul has said, ” there is no male nor female. ”
Even so there is a lot of good meat in this chapter to guide us in ways to worship!
