Groundless Hope

They have also healed the hurt of My people slightly, saying, ‘Peace, peace!’ when there is no peace. __Jeremiah 6:14

All of us live somewhere between hope and hopelessness.    

Hope gets us out of bed in the morning. Hope gives us the courage to go another day. On the other hand, hopelessness drags us down and darkens our world.   

And thus, it is my fervent wish to give people hope. 

As Henry Cloud states in his book, Necessary Endings, “Hope is one of the most powerful forces in the universe. With hope, we can endure almost anything…In short, hope keeps us going.”

But…

Hope must be honest hope. 

Honest hope is grounded in reality. 

Honest hope assesses the evidence and weighs the odds.

Honest hope is willing to admit when more effort is futile.

Honest hope understands that endings matters too.

Honest hope knows there are times that we must release control.

Honest hope lets us lay burdens down without guilt.

Honest hope sometimes shuts the door and walks away in order to hope another day.

The ONE THING for today: Sometimes the best thing we can do is admit that there is no hope.  To admit this liberates us to move beyond baseless hope so that we can truly and fully be healed.
