How Much is Enough?

The bin of flour was not used up, nor did the jar of oil run dry, according to the word of the LORD which He spoke by Elijah. (1 Kings 17:16, NKJV)

How much is enough?

That is one of the great questions of life.

How much do I need to pray?  Read my bible?  Go to church?

Is going the second mile enough or should I be willing to even go a third…or a fourth, or…?  How far is enough, really?

How many times should I turn the other cheek for it to be enough?  Once, and then I get to whack him back? Or should I turn the cheek two or three more times? How much is enough?

How much do I need save?  To give?  To forgive?

How much do I need to do around the house to do my fair share?

What about work, when is enough enough?

Do I have enough of what it takes?

Do I have enough time?  Enough energy, enough intelligence, enough talent?

Do I have enough?

One of the important questions of life.

I can picture her – the widow from Zarephath – stoking the morning fire, getting ready to prepare breakfast like she’s done for the last 100 days since the man of God had come to town.  She opens the bin and once again it is almost empty but somehow, like all the other times, there’s just enough for breakfast.  Same thing with the oil.

Day after day…never full, but always enough.

Turns out she wasn’t depending on the flour bin or the jar of oil to meet her needs; she was depending on God and He is always enough.

The ONE THING for today: Without God you will never have enough, do enough, be enough; with God, His grace will always be sufficient.

And lest I should be exalted above measure by the abundance…He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
