Life as a Marathon: Keys to Lasting Success
“Life isn’t a hundred-meter race against your friends, but a lifelong marathon against yourself.”
― Haemin Sunim, The Things You Can See Only When You Slow Down
Investor’s Business Daily’s 10 Secrets to Success
- Take Action: Goals are nothing without action. Don’t be afraid to get started. Just do it.
- Never Stop Learning: Go back to school, read books, get training and acquire new skills.
- Be Persistent and Work Hard: Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Never give up.
Three Keys for Lasting Success:
I have learned the power of compounding. Investing regularly over a long period of time really does add up. And this goes far beyond finances. Investing in relationships (marriage and friendships), personal growth, doing your job with excellence – these things add up.
I have also learned the limitations of compounding. You can’t invest in everything. The longer you live the fewer options you have. You can’t go back and start over. Once the gun fires and the race starts and you head off in a direction it gets harder and harder to change course. Eventually you can’t. Best to plan ahead and really like what you’re doing and who you’re doing with.
And finally, I am beginning to be painfully aware that even marathons don’t last forever. Deadlines and finish lines are a reminder that life is not forever and that all “success” is not equal. Keep the home fires burning brightly, for in the end, all your keys will be turned in and all the doors will shut behind you but one – home.
The ONE THING for today: A successful life is not lived in day. A successful life is the results of being faithfully committed to the right things and the right people over a long period of time.
