On October 24, 1929, the Church of God General Assembly meeting in Cleveland, Tennessee, established the first denomination-wide youth program known as YPE. Earlier local and state programs initiated by Alda B. Harrison, M.P. Cross, and Houston R. Morehead, were influential, but the Assembly adopted the name that had been established in Florida by State Overseer R.P. Johnson, seen here. According to the minutes, the Assembly adopted the following recommendation: “We your committee appointed by the council of Twelve and Seventy in joint session, to formulate a suitable plan of organization for the benefit of our young people and to select a suitable name for said organization, respectfully submit the following: That the above named organization shall be known as ‘The Church of God Young People’s Endeavor,’ (abbreviated form ‘C. of G. Y. P. E.) ….”
