Playing by the Rules

“To reach people that no one else is reaching you have to do something that no else is doing.”

__Craig Groeschel, 2008 Leadership Summit

My dear VPG,

One of my favorite templates for deciding whether or not to do something are these three questions:

  • Is it legal?
  • Is it moral?
  • And could it help people? (Don’t make guaranteed success a part of the equation; try stuff!)

I developed these questions as I began to get older and started having younger leaders around me who wanted to test the limits.

I decided I didn’t want to be one of those old grumpy guys who didn’t want to change or adapt new ideas, technology, and new ways of doing things.

Those questions have served me well in finding the right balance.

But I do have one word of caution.

Legal and moral are not the same thing.

Playing by the rules and living by God’s rules are not always the same. Just because society around you says it is okay doesn’t mean that it is.

If you err, err on the side of God’s rules. Ultimately, you’ll always come out better.

Love,

Your very own Papa
