T. L. Lowery preached a conference around 1988 in Germany…
T. L. Lowery preached a conference around 1988 in Germany for the servicemen’s department and it went over well with the servicemen and Center directors. The following week I received a letter from Brother Lowery sharing his excitement about preaching to the servicemen and thanking us for the hospitality. He included a request to me to search for a good used Mercedes to give to a friend. He said he would send the necessary funds to pay and ship the car.
The letter was typed on National Church of God stationary. I thought to myself that such a request was inappropriate and especially on Church stationary. It was a request to buy a car for a friend so that was OK!
I immediately knew the place to go to find a used Mercedes on the German market. But I never did.
A few days later I was on the phone with another director and I ask him did he get any strange letters lately. He said reluctantly he did and did not say who it was. I told him my letter was from T. L. Lowery. He said his was as well and that he had found a car to send. When he knew that I had already gotten a letter he backed out of sending a car.
Eventually I had heard from most center Directors that they had gotten the same letter on National COG stationary.
One director had already shipped a car and Lowery sent the money. The problem is that the dollar fluctuated in exchange for Deutsch Marks and the director was left with over a $300 shortfall. He had to pay from his own pocket to send the car. He subsequently notified Bro Lowery and the last I heard from the director, Lowery never made good on reimbursement.
The purpose was to get more than 10 Mercedes and I suppose give to ten friends of his.
What do you think?
