The Humility to Trust

“Humility is the beautiful condition of people who have learned to surrender their desires, their glory, and their power. Such people are in the process of becoming who they were meant to be in God’s kingdom by giving up the life of the self. It is an essential quality for anyone who desires to live a life without lack as Jesus himself did.”

— Life Without Lack: Living in the Fullness of Psalm 23 by Dallas Willard

First Willard’s quote (see above) and then a call from an old friend – John Wilson.

In our conversation he reminded me of a prayer meeting we attended 25 years ago when a mutual friend, Jack Walker, said: “We have all we need, except more of God.”

First, kudos to John for remembering that!

But more importantly the reminder it gave me.

Maybe I am the only worrier. But I have a gift for worrying. For example, just this morning I had crunched the figures one more time to see if I was still on track to ensure that Sonja and I had would have enough to make it to the end of our lives.

And then Dallas Willard’s quote, and then Jack Walker’s quote.

I know of Dallas Willard – a good and godly man who is now with the Lord.

But I know Jack Walker. Due to an unfortunate car accident, Jack walks wherever he goes on crutches, and has done so for many years. The use of his hands has been compromised. He knows weakness and vulnerability and through it he learned the humility to trust God.

And as a result, Jack has demonstrated day in and day for many years that we have all we need except more of God.

The ONE THING for today: Oh God, give us the humility to trust YOU to be enough.

And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
