2 Thessalonians 2:15 NASB
“So then, brethren, stand firm and hold to the traditions which you were taught, whether by word of mouth or by letter from us.”
The verse above are often used by Catholics as a proof text or scriptural support for their use of traditions. what are your thoughts regarding this? does this verse disprove sola scriptura?
Single verse taken out of context of a whole. To whom was the message sent? What traditions (what is the Greek meaning of the word traditions used in this context?) were being observed or had stopped being observed by the intended audience?
This is referring to the transmission of oral tradition before/during when the four gospels were written. Not everyone could read. So the apostles passed on teachings in orally memorizable form. It would be anachronistic to say they referred to some later traditions or ideas that are now extra biblical.
