Dear proclaimer of Christ’s Living Bread; When God’s Word says: “Preach the Word” I don’t believe it is meant here to preach in the context of reading or proclaiming it from your manuscript or a book as though there is no immediate, continual and everlasting literal Spirit of life flowing from it and His Spirit of life flowing in and through you. “Even as you read the Word of God”, may the Holy Spirit grab you to the core of your very being to such a degree that everything of your self-life contritely breaks and crumbles to a depth that only Christ the Living Word of God can bring the redeeming, restoring, reviving joy/strength of His presence where you and His people gather! Not only is this important for you to realize, but for your hearers as well who will not be hearing your voice but the voice of Almighty God Himself. In your preparation and proclamation never forget to; “PREACH THE WORD AS IT IS WRITTEN”! He has called and chosen you to speak for Himself through you. (2 Timothy 4:1-3) Coming Alongside you serving Christ

Daryl: Paul’s letter was written in AD 67 and Mark the first of the gospels didn’t appear until around 70 AD and so Timothy would not have had the gospels and he might not have seen the other letters that Paul has written to other people. So I think that Paul writing from prison in Rome must have meant that Timothy was to preach the word that he had heard Paul himself preach. So we find that most of the preaching ( in the first century ) about Christ was done from word-of-mouth since the different letters had not been assembled until much later.

Charles what date would you place the II Tim.? For that matter Mark and the other three gospels? Scholarship is scholarship and does not fall under liberal or conservative.

Scofield puts the writing of II Tim. at 67 AD, Mark at 68 AD and the Gospel of John at 85 AD and that leaves the two synoptic gospels, which he dates earlier but then a great deal has been discovered since Scofield; even if Scofield is right in his dating, Matt. & Lk. would have still been in scrolls and would have had limited circulation. The only point I was making was that when Paul told Timothy to Preach the word he did not have in mind the bible as we know it today. It would be 1400 + years before the bible as we know it would be available.
