One of my favorite professors at Lee was Dr. French Arrington. He came by to visit with me at my church in Ohio. I took my Greek II under him and really enjoyed reading the NT in its original language. It was the beginning of a wonderful thing. Later, I taught Greek. I used it while in my Master’s and Doctoral work. I still study from it today. The Koine Greek language is so rich, but yet so simple that it can be easily understood. On Judgment Day, the books will be open. One of the books is the Holy Bible. A person must apply himself to know God’s Word. Let me give an example. The Gospel of John 1:15, “John bare witness of hims and cried, saying This was he of whom I spake, He that cometh after me is preferred before me: for he was before me.” There are two BEFOREs in this verse. However, they are not the same Greek word. They are different words, even though the English translation is simply “BEFORE.” One means Before in TIME such as “Before Abraham was I.” The other Before means “Before me in RANK such as “I am the Captain of the Lord’s host.” Jesus is the “Captain of our Salvation.” Just as a Captain is a higher rank than a Private, Jesus is the “King of Kings, and the Lord of Lords.”
