Hello, I am doing a Bible study about gifts received from the Holy Spirit. I have a small problem: I cannot understand the difference between „to evangelize” (from the Greek verb *euangelizo) and „*to proclaim*” (from the *Greek verb *kerusso). *For me both are the same, but the author insist for the readers to know the different meaning that the terms have.If somebody can help me, it would be awesome. 🙂 I hope I made myself understood.

Hi Oxana, I don’t know if this will help but I can try. Both words can carry with it the idea of preaching, but they have two different understandings that are different. εὐαγγελίζω is arrived at from two Greek words, εὖ, which is Good, and ἄγγελος, which is translated as either angel or messenger. Because of it it carries theological meaning to announce or to preach the Good News (the Gospel). κηρύσσω, on the other hand, does not necessarily carry with it the same meaning or purpose. It simple means that you can announce something in a serious manner. Thus, it could be a proclamation of the Gospel or it can be a proclamation of the State, In most of the instances where we see κηρύσσω in the New Testament it is used in order to proclaim the Gospel, but those uses shouldn’t detract from the Semantics of the word, as they do convey different meanings.

Evangelize: to basically ‘sell it’. Proclaim: to say what YOU know.
