Grace and Truth | Advent 3 of 3

John 1:17 | NIV | For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

It’s said of Jesus, “the world was made through Him; but the world did not recognize Him.” Jesus was creating this world, and all those in it, in Genesis 1. But, during His time on earth, the Pharisees (the very people who should have seen His coming as the fulfillment of scripture) rejected Him, and – eventually – the people did, shouting “Give us Barabbas!”
“Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God” (John 1:12 | NIV).
This is more than the choice between Heaven and Hell. It’s the choice of whether I will go through life alone, or have Him go it with me. He is my life, and my light. He gives grace and truth.
“…grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.”
The Word became flesh, God came to be with us, taking our place and punishment, freeing us from the power of sin and death. We find grace in Him.
I’ll admit it, sometimes we act like His entire life was wrapped up in being born of a virgin and then dying on the cross. But, He taught us what His kingdom looks like – not just so that we would find it in eternity, but so we would live it out here and now, seeing His kingdom come and transform lives and communities… even nations.
This is what we celebrate this season: the God who put on flesh, to rescue us, and who is with us (who never leaves nor forsakes) on every hill and in every valley of life.
