Hi brothers & sisters
On a recent Zoom bible study it was said that because my fiance does not speak in tounges she is therefore not sealed by the Holy Spirit and is NOT SAVED. I’m new to the group and have looked to see if this topic has been clarified but can’t see a direct answer. This statement could cause my fiance to doubt her faith in Christ and God. Can anyone (RESPECTFULLY) shed some light ?♥️
Brother, being a Christian is having your dead spirit breathed to life by Almighty God and being indwelled by the Holy Spirit. Both of these are yours the moment you believe in Jesus Christ, crucified, and resurrected. PLUS NOTHING.
If she has accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Lord and Saviour she is fine…Not everyone is given the gift of tongues…not to worry…

Tongues is a gift. If you aren’t gifted in that way you won’t be able to speak it. Also scripture is clear that if there is no interpreter present (interpretation of tongues is also a gift) than tongues shouldn’t be spoken out loud to anyone
This is one of those subjects that I find come up now and then, and it is always interesting. The reality is we are saved by Christ, it is an gift of pure grace, nothing more, nothing less. Our faith is, likewise, a gift. After all, it is only through the Holy Spirit that we can come to faith. As we often hear in Scripture we are, in our sins, dead. A dead man is not capable of doing anything for themselves. Yet, in the Spirit there is life through Its transformative, regenerative power. If your fiancé is born again then she is “sealed” by the Spirit and her salvation is secure
Assure her that what was stated is poor theology. As mentioned above the answers are in 1 Corinthians. Perhaps consider the theology of the people who are leading you in your Christian journey right now, you may need to surround yourself with some others with different interpretative skills. John Bevere has written a book called ‘The Holy Spirit: An introduction’ well worth a read or listen.
The bible clearly says that not everyone has every spiritual gift. We are only saved through faith in Jesus’s saving grace. Tongues are not important.
Leave that Bible study right away. I was trapped in that circle too and honestly many time I thought to make up a tongue out of embarrassment. Some of those people are so full of themselves that they totally forget 1 Cor. 13:1. This is Biblical illiteracy. I would not continue a Bible study with them.
Whoever told her that needs to study more. The Bible is clear that not all should be teachers and this is why. Heard what the Bible says. “But one and the same Spirit works all these things, distributing to each one individually as He wills.” 1 Cor. 12:11. All gifts are given sovereignly by the Holy Spirit. Paul does say that we should eagerly desire the greater gifts (1Cor. 12:31) but he says that gift would be to prophecy.
Stay away from that bible study and group. Sounds like deceptive Charismania type of brainwashed heretics.
Pentecostal and some charismatics are notorious for that. As already stated it’s bad theology. This is why it’s important not to cherry pick scripture and to always try to apply proper understanding of the intended context. I’m sure that same group is probably into Oneness theology as well.
Yes. Sorry. Can’t remember bthe exact verse. But the Bible is actually quite clear that the Holy Spirit gives different gifts to different people. Not being able to speak in tongues simply means that is not a gift that she has. Not every one can be a hand, or a head or a foot. We all have different gifts so we can use our gifts to help each other. Honestly, I don’t know how helpful speaking in tongues even is on a regular basis. It has occasionally came in handy when there was a language barrier between two different groups of people. But a church full of people people speaking a language nobody there understands isn’t real helpful in my opinion. I know the Holy Spirit took control of my prayer once. But still pretty sure the prayer was in English.
That is unbiblical gobbly gook. Paul called tongues the least of the gifts. He also established guidelines – 2 or at the most 3 people in a meeting, in an orderly fashion, MUST be an interpreter present. Oh, and no women.

It is a mistake to add to the Bible what it does not actually say. The seal of the Holy Spirit as Paul taught it is neither a means of gaining salvation nor a mean for preventing forfeiture of it. If you sealed a letter in Paul’s day, a rolled up scroll sealed with a hot wax seal, it was an indicator that the letter was genuine to the recipient. But the letter was already genuine before it was sealed because the author had truly written it. As believers, we are truly Christ’s from the exact moment we were born again. Even if we are sealed with the Holy Spirit later, we were saved before sealed. And once sealed, the Holy Spirit does not cauterize or lobotomize our self-determination. We must serve God with diligence and zeal, fear and trembling as Paul and others taught, to make a grand entrance into our Lord’s kingdom. Your group with its strange interpretations of the seal of the Holy Spirit has not studied much and adds to the Bible much opinion without forethought. I recommend that you find another group that is smarter to grow in Christ.
Salvation is by grace alone through faith alone in Christ alone. Speaking in tongues is a spiritual gift given by God to whom He chooses. We are all the body of Christ given different gifts.
This is the heresy of Pentecostalism/Charismatic foolishness that has invaded Christianity as a Christian cult teaching the pagan ritual of speaking in an ecstatic utterance that originated in the Temple of Delphi near Corinth. This pagan practice of a Temple Priestess inhaling intoxicating fumes and offering oracles of incoherent prophecy to those awaiting enlightenment carried over in the Church at Corinth and created much dissension and confusion.
Pentecostalism and other forms of Charismatic teachings mandate speaking in an unknown tongue in order to authenticate one’s salvation…IT’S ALL DEMONIC AND HERESY. The Holy Spirit is given ONCE to the true believer in Jesus Christ as Lord (Ephesians 1:13) and tongues, intelligible languages not studied as noted in the Acts are NO LONGER relevant to the Church as this Gift was given to the early Church to spread the Gospel throughout the known World by speaking and understanding actual languages that the user had not studied or known prior to receiving the Gift.
If we don’t understand someone else speaking in tongues, they could be speaking for the devil.

No disrespect to you (the OP), but the charismatic denominations have muddied the waters as to what the gift truly was back in the 1st century Apostolic Age, and they use a counterfeit babble language now. I can’t wait until Jesus Christ comes back and fixes this hellacious mess.

Brad Goddard… Rest assured that possession of the gift is in no way solid evidence of regeneration. While the gift is beautiful and left to the rest of the comments for argument, the NT says to repent and believe in Jesus. That’s it. Not to walk up front at an alter call, not to do aerobics, not to speak in tongues…
But to repent and believe in Christ as savior. That’s the starting line to the assuredness of salvation.

the gift of tongues was a miraculous, revelatory gift, and the age of miracles and revelation ended with the apostles. The last recorded miracles in the New Testament occurred around A.D. 58, with the healings on the island of Malta (Acts 28:7-10). From A.D. 58 to 96, when John finished the book of Revelation, no miracle is recorded. Miracle gifts like tongues and healing are mentioned only in 1 Corinthians, an early epistle. Two later epistles, Ephesians and Romans, both discuss gifts of the Spirit at length—but no mention is made of the miraculous gifts. By that time miracles were already looked on as something in the past (Heb. 2:3-4). Apostolic authority and the apostolic message needed no further confirmation. The revelatory gifts had ceased to serve any purpose. And when the apostolic age ended with the death of the Apostle John, the signs that identified the apostles had already become moot (cf. 2 Cor. 12:12).
Second, tongues were intended as a sign to unbelieving Israel (1 Cor. 14:21-22; cf. Is. 28:11-12). They signified that God had begun a new work that encompassed the Gentiles. The Lord would now speak to all nations in all languages. The barriers were down. And so the gift of languages symbolized not only the curse of God on a disobedient nation, but also the blessing of God on the whole world.
Tongues were therefore a sign of transition between the Old and New Covenants. With the establishment of the church, a new day had dawned for the people of God. God would speak in all languages. But once the period of transition was past, the sign was no longer necessary.
Third, the gift of tongues was inferior to other gifts. It was given primarily as a sign (1 Cor. 14:22) and was also easily misused to edify self (1 Cor. 14:4). The church meets for the edification of the body, not self-gratification or personal experience-seeking. Therefore, tongues had limited usefulness in the church, and so it was never intended to be a permanent gift.

Anyone who says that speaking in tongues is necessary to be saved is adding to the gospel.
salvation is by grace through faith, and not by gift. By their fruit you shall know them and not by their gifts. Regeneration is the evidence of saving faith.
It’s a gift of the spirit, not the proof of salvation. Proof of salvation is sanctification and fruits of the spirit.

Salvation does not come via gifts. We are saved by grace through faith in Christ. The evidence of that faith is in a continual loving walk of obedience with Christ.
The gifts are given by God. Not all people have the same gift. These gifts are to be used for the edification of the church so that evangelism and discipleship can occur.

I do not believe that tongues has necessarily ended however what is often declared to be tongues, is not the biblical example of tongues.
This is what I hate about this group and all apologetic groups. There are so many unsaved preachers, so many unsaved Pharisees who like to throw laws into the minds of young Christians. Don’t allow this to happen to you. You may be better away from these groups and just read the bible and ask the Holy Spirit to guide you, He will. Please, I have been a Christian for 23 years and I don’t know everything, far from it, but I do know this. God is a God of Love and you will not find very much love in these groups. All you will find is laws, rules, heavy burdens that are not meant for young Christians. If she doubts her salvation because of this issue then she should still just be drinking spiritual milk, not trying to eat steak while using a spoon. In my 23yrs, 24 next month, I have never spoke in tongue’s. I have had dreams. Visions, words of knowledge etc, but never once spoke in tongue’s. Tell her she is loved by God and to find him in his word. He will reveal in her the gifts he has given her.
Absolute nonsense. You are saved the moment you realise you’re a sinner, repent of your sins, turn to Christ and ask Him to be your lord and saviour and then submit to him, that’s it!
Not biblical, false doctrine that is being preached with the Pentecostal. Not all Pentecostals believe this. Please protect yourself and get out! You are saved by faith through grace, you become born again and you are a child of God. If you have repented from your sins and trusted in Christ alone as your Saviour, trusted on His work on the cross , not your own works, you are saved my brother! Bless you

I myself do not believe tounges are the evidence of being saved but I wanted to pose the question to the group so my fiance could read all the comments for herself and see that it is not just my own personal interpretation. First of all congrats to being engaged and to a believer. You chose the right thing, the way of God.
Now to your question:
I advise to look through Acts and you will see plenty occassions were people got saved without speaking in tongues. You see it says in the epistels that we are sealed with the moment of salvation. And 1.cor 13 makes it clear that tongues are worthless but love is the key. The love of God in our hearts.
You will see in Acts instances where new believers spoke in tongues and prophesied even after pentecost. That might confuse you. But if you see the background it will be clear. So there was like mini pentecosts in different people groups as that was an important sign to the jewish beliwvers in jerusalwm that God did not make a difference between jew and gentile or samaritan. Because the jews classified people like that and were not inclusive. So God does affirm the gentiles clearly as well as establishing pauls authority and apostleship. So please do not worry and encourage your dear fiancee. I recommend you to get a hold on either the reformatuon study bible or john macarthurs study bible. It will enrich and help you.
Here’s one for you. When Jesus said to the thief on the cross this day you will be with me in paradise Jesus didn’t add as long as you speak in tongues.

Now, dear brothers and sisters, regarding your question about the special abilities the Spirit gives us. I don’t want you to misunderstand this. There are different kinds of spiritual gifts, but the same Spirit is the source of them all. There are different kinds of service, but we serve the same Lord. God works in different ways, but it is the same God who does the work in all of us. A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other. To one person the Spirit gives the ability to give wise advice ; to another the same Spirit gives a message of special knowledge. The same Spirit gives great faith to another, and to someone else the one Spirit gives the gift of healing. He gives one person the power to perform miracles, and another the ability to prophesy. He gives someone else the ability to discern whether a message is from the Spirit of God or from another spirit. Still another person is given the ability to speak in unknown languages, while another is given the ability to interpret what is being said. It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.

Speaking in tongues has nothing to do with salvation. It’s a spiritual gift that is given by God. Only those who are Christians can receive that kind of gift though. But again, the Bible makes clear what is needed for salvation and speaking in tongues or being baptized in the name of Jesus only are not the criteria

I was told the same thing when I was attending a Pentecostal church. I was told that is a false doctrine and if I was interested in reading where in the Bible I should read 2 books by the Pastor and Bible Theologian John MacArthur. One book was called Charasmatic Chaos and the other called Strangefire. Both of these books took me to the correct parts of the Bible where this is discussed. Please read them with your wife
The Holy Spirit comes to dwell in us at conversion. Most Christians believe speaking in tongues is the ability to speak in someone else’s language to share the gospel when you haven’t studied that language. That is exactly what happened when the Holy Spirit first came down on the apostles.
It is not true. Your salvation is not based on speaking in tongues. God moves in each lives differently.
